Our welfare state needs an update

10 million people in Germany don’t use the welfare state even though they are entitled to benefits – about half of everyone eligible. We make it so simple that everyone can use it.

The problem

Thousands of authorities, dozens of benefits, countless forms – no solution.

The welfare state is a great idea stuck in a system that resists reform. Many people shy away from the bureaucratic jungle, get lost in it, or don’t even know they are entitled to help. The result: 13.4 million people in Germany live in poverty.

Our solution

The welfare state, made simple

We don’t need to reform the welfare state to make it usable. WeFix.Social gives it a new user interface.

Uncover entitlements

Eligible people are informed proactively – instead of having to ask.

All benefits in one place

One calculator, one application – across all social benefits.

Fully automated applications

Forms are filled in, checked and sent directly.

Communication with authorities included

Follow-up questions, evidence, decisions – we handle the correspondence.

On equal terms

Friendly, encouraging and free of bureaucratic jargon.

Multilingual

The welfare state in the language people actually understand.

For authorities & municipalities

A capable state instead of an overloaded one

less workload for the authorities

Because everything is so complicated, every second application ends up at the wrong authority – and still has to be processed. Of the ones sent to the right place, 80% are incomplete. We act as a pre-filter. We make sure that only complete, correct and pre-checked applications reach the right office. That relieves overstretched authorities – without them having to change anything.

Benefits for municipalities

  • Only complete and correct applications – at the right office
  • 90% less verification effort
  • Great usability for genuine citizen-centred services
  • Reduce hidden poverty locally
  • No costs
  • No integration with IT systems required
  • Processes stay the same – only the applications get better

Current challenge

Enabling mass scale

By automating application checks and building an AI social counsellor that guides people through the process.

Scientifically evaluated

A randomised study by DIW Berlin is investigating whether WeFix.Social measurably increases the take-up of social benefits – and, for the first time, how big the problem of non-take-up really is.

Because there was no cross-benefit entitlement calculator before us, this social problem has so far only been estimated.

Next step

Public launch 2027

Then we open WeFix.Social to everyone. Together with civil society, we want to digitise the welfare state, end poverty at scale and show that our state can act. Welfare and social associations, counselling centres, foundations and municipalities can become part of this major undertaking now.

Become a partner
We now have the chance to end poverty at scale.

75% of poverty in Germany exists because the welfare state is too complicated to use. With artificial intelligence, we can now make it usable – and finally accessible to everyone. Perhaps the most important building block for stabilising society.

Michael Bohmeyer

Ending poverty costs money. Keeping poverty costs many times more.

If everyone claimed the social benefits they are legally entitled to, there would be almost no poverty left – but the state would have to spend an estimated 35 billion euros more per year.

That would be a smart investment: we are already paying the follow-on costs of hidden poverty for 10 million people today – health, lost economic output, crime and more.

The follow-on costs of poverty are at least 4.5 times higher than the cost of eliminating it.

We all pay for these follow-on costs every day – even though we could reduce them. Not a single new law is needed. We just have to make sure that those affected (can) claim what they are legally entitled to. That is what we help with – and we hope to lead a long-overdue, productive and fact-based debate about the welfare state along the way.
